Answers to Some Questions about Registration
Why should I register my copy of ScreenChooser?
Because Shareware authors depend on your contribution. Shareware is beneficial to users and developers alike. Users benefit by trying out software before committing themselves to buying it. With Shareware, you can be sure you are getting software that is right for you. Developers benefit by reducing advertisement and distribution costs, savings that are passed down to you. Shareware is a convenient way to obtain quality software at affordable prices.
The flip side of Shareware is that it requires your cooperation. Only you can give authors the incentive they need to continue distributing their Shareware. Shareware is like a democracy, where you cast your vote to express your support. If you enjoy the benefit Shareware offers, register the programs you use and Shareware will continue to exist, offering some of the most affordable and useful software anywhere. Likewise, express your disapproval by not registering and your voice, too, will be heard.
As others will also register ScreenChooser, why should my contribution make a difference?
Your contribution does make a difference. Don't let this reasoning keep you from doing your part. The following tidbit of information might surprise you: Time and time again, research has shown that the more people are present, the less likely it is that any single individual will assist someone in the need of help. Most people, on seeing so many others around, reason that someone else is bound to help. Consequently, in their minds, they reduce the urgency of the situation.
This is no less true with Shareware. Through information networks, Shareware indeed reaches many hundreds or thousands of people, but this only tends to lessen the chances that any single person will contribute. Keep this in mind when you use Shareware or when you see someone in need of help. In both cases, your contribution does make a difference.
Why does an unregistered version of ScreenChooser lock up after a few months of use? Do you not trust your users?
Nothing could be further from the truth. The expiration is there for the protection of users. No greater injustice could be done to you than to allow those who do not pay the continued use of ScreenChooser. To allow it would be to allow them to take advantage of the honesty of you and the many others who support Shareware.
I am having trouble getting ScreenChooser to run on my Macintosh, should I register before I ask for help?
No. ScreenChooser may have an incompatibility for which an upgrade is not yet available. If you register beforehand, you may put me in the inconvenient situation of returning your money or asking you to wait until the next release. Your registration does not guarantee an immediate upgrade, as these things take time. If you are having problems, mail me a letter describing it and I will try to correct the problem. A new release of ScreenChooser, if needed, may take a few months. Make sure you are satisfied with ScreenChooser before paying for it.
I do not have access to American banks, should I send cash instead of checks?
Under no circumstances should you send cash through the mail. Money has been lost that way. If you cannot sent a check, ask your local post office clerk for information on how you can obtain a money order. Most post offices, including those outside of the US, offer money orders that, unlike cash, can only be cashed by the intended recipient. Using money orders also takes care of international currency conversions, making it the preferred way to register ScreenChooser from outside the US.
May I give ScreenChooser away to friends?
Yes. In fact, we encourage you to give ScreenChooser away, upload it to bulletin board services and pass it on to friends. The only restriction is that it be distributed altered and that it is not sold for a profit or used as an incentive to buy another product without the written consent from the author. ScreenChooser may be uploaded to bulletin board services or online services provided that no charge is issued to obtain it other than the regular connect charges for accessing the service or board. As a courtesy to other users, however, I ask that you only give away the entire ScreenChooser package, rather than the individual files.
You may not give away the registration key to other people. If you know someone who wants ScreenChooser, give them an unregisted copy and encourage them to register their own copy.
